Frequently Asked Questions

Why Choose Getaway Adventures for Wine Country touring?

Getaway Adventures is the original touring company in Napa Valley and Sonoma County. All employees and guides are local to the area and have expertise on wine, restaurants, history, flora, fauna and the best trails and roads to share with you. If you are comparing tour companies, please ask the others if they are local to the area and how long they have been in business.

Getaway Adventures has been in business since 1991 with the same owners, and has long standing relations with many hotels and wineries that other companies can not match. We strive hard to be the best touring company in the area and promise you will have made the right choice in going on tour with us. Our goal is to be an environmentally friendly local tour company that educates our guests on wine, the area and gives you a chance to smell the roses (and zinfandel) and get some exercise too!

When are the tours available?

Day tours are available daily from March 1st through November 30th. We still do these tours outside of these dates year round, so please call us for availability. Multiday trips dates are listed on the tours page. Click on the tour you are interested in to see available dates.

What is the distance we will ride or paddle?

Bikes- Our one day tours normally go a distance of 15-20 miles. This is spread out over the course of the whole day with many stops at wineries in between.

Kayaks- Most kayaking routes are between 5-7 miles.

What is the difficulty of the bike tours?

The routes we choose are geared towards “Enthusiastic Beginners” and are mainly flat with only a few bumps here and there. If you want a higher level of difficulty and more miles, it can be fitted into the day, just let us know!

Are there wine tasting fees and how much do they cost?

Recently more and more wineries are charging wine tasting fees. We try to choose wineries that do not charge, but sometimes it is unavoidable. Wine tasting fees vary from $5-10 per person per winery. In most cases if you purchase wine you are reimbursed the tasting fee.

What is the weather like?

Beautiful! It normally does not rain from the beginning of May to the end of October or November. The mornings can be foggy, but not cold. Our summer highs vary from the 70’s – 90’s and we have low humidity!! We do go on tour rain or shine because we always expect it to be sunny! You can go to our weather page to see what current conditions look like.

What should I wear?

Biking – Wear comfortable, breathing clothes you can ride in. Layers are best as the mornings can be cooler than the rest of the day. Tennis shoes or similar shoes are great. If you decide to wear pants, please be aware that your right leg will need to be rolled up or cinched about the pants leg to make sure the bike chain does not eat your pants. Don’t forget your sunglasses, sun block and camera!

Kayaking – Wear clothes you do not mind getting wet in. Bathing suits, shorts and t-shirts are best. River shoes or sandals like Tevas are perfect. Don’t forget a strap for your sunglasses, a hat, and sun block!

What is for lunch?

We provide you with a gourmet wine country style picnic. Pasta salad with sun dried tomoatos, pesto and artichoke hearts; tossed green salads with in season vegetables, local artisan cheeses are a few of the items we serve. Our menu varies due to what is in season locally.

How many people will be on our tour?

We limit our tours to 8 – 10 people, the maximum is always 12 people.

Is there van support for the tour in case I do not want to ride the whole day?

We can offer van support. On most tours, the group is self-sufficient and van support is not necessary. For day tours we can make sure the van is there if requested. For group tours outside of Calistoga and Healdsburg, there is always a van on tour.

What types of bikes will be using?

We use hybrid, upright bikes from Marin. We also offer touring and road bikes, mountain bikes, cruisers and tandems – let us know if you would prefer to use one of our other bikes. We do not supply clip-less pedals, but can take our pedals off to attach yours.

How do I get to and from the airport?

You can either rent a car for the week or use public transport options. The San Francisco and Oakland aiports have shuttle services which are a quick and comfortable way to get you up to Santa Rosa for the start of the Premiere Trip. We recommend the Sonoma County Airport Express.
