Wine Tasting at Chateau Mtelena

I just finished a great tour with some nice folks from Sacramento. It was a glorious Sunday with lot of sunshine, mustard grass in full bloom in the vineyard. We visited Château Mtelena, Bennett Lane, Lava Vines and had a cave tour at Clos Pegase.

The cooler weather and near empty wineries make this a great time to visit!

Fall Colors and New Friends in Calistoga

Even though the mornings have turned quite cool, these fall days are still stunning. The group was six today. Two from Michigan, two from Indiana and two from New Hampshire. Cycling down the backroads of Calistoga the vines put on quite a show. The leaves on the zinfandel vines are turning as deep of a purple as the wine, and the syrah leaves are a lime green tinged with red. We meandered, mingled and made merry and time flew by as always.

Lunch time on a Getaway Adventures Tours yumm

What a glorious day!

Weather was fantastic and the fall colors are starting to really kick in. We had a spirited group staying at the Calistoga Ranch and kept a pretty good pace as we biked up the Silverado Trail. From there to our 1st winery, Bennet Lane Winery, and their incredible Maximus collection of wines. We had a great lunch there and then cycled over to Summers Winery where we lucked out and saw the crush in progress. Grapes being process and pumped into tanks.

Calistoga never looked better as the fall sun lights up the Palisades and caressed our faces. Back the Calistoga Ranch by 4 pm and that’s a great day!

Father’s Day in Napa Valley

Napa Valley Sip 'N Cycle

Today Dave had two guests out for a bike ride and wine tasting on a glorious day in the Napa Valley. The weather was perfect; we enjoyed blue sky, a couple white puffy clouds, the green grape vines covering the valley floor like a carpet, all in 75 degree weather.

We started off the morning heading south for a 45 minute bike ride down to Frank Family, where we tasted some great Chardonnay, Zinfandel, and Cabernet. We then headed back north. Along the way we rode past two red tail hawks that were standing on the wires only 10 feet from us. We toured the art work at Clos Pegase before tasting their wines, then continued our northern ride to August Briggs. Here we tasted Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah, and a couple of Cabernets. We then headed through Calistoga, past the famous “Old Faithful” geyser, and along the backroads to Bennett Lane Winery, where we accompanied our wine tasting with a delicious lunch. The staff at Bennett Lane were fabulous and treated us like royalty.

Overall it was a wonderful Father’s Day with my two guests from Chicago!

An afternoon of biking and wine tasting

A youthful group of motivated wine tasters awaited me on Saturday the 11^th, and a really beautiful day appeared to be on tap for our Calistoga Sip & Cycle. After getting our bikes and gear in order we headed south on a rolling ride south on the Silverado Trail.

My guests became old friends after a very short time, and enjoyed all of their tastings as one happy group. Lingering in each tasting room and over lunch, our day proceeded at a relaxing pace and finished with a casual roll back to town along a quiet bike path.

Two married couples, one each from KY and VA were on the road today. They did the full 18 mile loop. The day was glorious warm, but breezy and very comfortable to cycle. They found a fair amount of wine that they liked and made some wonderful purchases.

Rob and Sandy from Memphis were on their second day of touring. Even though it was hot both days they were real troopers. They particularly like white wines. So we sought out some of the best in the valley. We started off at Frank Family with their Chardonnay and tried the Sauvignon Blanc after taking the tour at Clos Pegase. Lunch at Cuvaison with the whites and topped off the afternoon at Bennett Lane with their white Maximus blend.

August 22nd, Calistoga

Fantastic tour. Great people, great weather, great fun. A group of three from NH; parents and grown son who now lives in SF. A couple from CO, and a couple from OR. As a group, all the participants melded together and enjoyed each other’s company as much as I did.

We hit all the usual places and saw all the usual suspects, but with my verbal magic and quick repartee I made is seem new and magical. Like Madonna’s virgin, “touched for the very first time”.

August 18th 2008, Dry Creek Sip n’ Cycle

Today a couple from Ottawa and I went cycling in Dry Creek valley. We tasted Zichichi’s 2007 zinfandel out of the barrel, and it was phenomenal! After that we rode up to Preston and tasted. Then we headed off to Dry Creek vineyards for a tasting and lunch. After lunch we rode to Lambert Bridge and then one final tasting at Everett Ridge.

Almost perfect weather, especially in the morning. It was warm, but with pleasant breeze. On tour today were Joe and Jessica from San Diego. They were a delightful couple celebrating their fourth wedding anniversary. We started out going to 3 wineries north of town. We spent time in the Summer’s petting vineyard discussing veraison . They were pretty tasted out after lunch. We went to Clos Pegase just to see art and tried a couple of wines at August Briggs.
